MacKenzie Mathis joined the DanceLova Dance Academy faculty in January 2021. She began her dance journey at the age of 3 right here in Irvine, CA. During this time, she won various awards at local dance competitions as well as national competitions.
She later trained in Santa Ana, CA at the Orange County High School of the Arts, where she was taught and mentored by Steven Hyde.
She also trained with Julie Shulman, Alesia Young, Merrett Miller, Lisa Johnson and Lorin Johnson. While at the Orange County High School of the Arts, MacKenzie performed in many classical works, such as Coppelia, Raymonda, Don Quixote, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadere, Paquita, Swan Lake and La Sylphide all restaged by Steven Hyde.
MacKenzie earned her BFA in Contemporary Dance Performance with an emphasis in ballet and graduated with honors from The Boston Conservatory in May of 2016. During her time there, MacKenzie was selected to perform a classical pas de deux, Diane Et Acteon from La Esmeralda reconstructed by Gianni Di Marco on the mainstage at The Boston Conservatory in Fall of 2015 where she was accompanied by The Boston Conservatory Orchestra. She was also awarded a student scholarship at The Boston Conservatory entering into her freshman year.
She has also performed works by Jayne Persch, Jodie Gates, Francisco Gella, Lawrence Pech, Sophie Monet, Karole Armitage, Danny Buraczeski, Andrea Miller, Danny Pelzig, Uri Sands, among others. MacKenzie also performed in a variety of community performances such as the Laguna Beach Dance Festival in 2009, Women’s Conference in 2010 and Bravo for South Bay Ballet in 2010. She has attended summer programs with American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Miami City Ballet and the Maple Conservatory of Dance, under the direction of Charles Maple. She also attended a winter program as well such as the O’Callaghan Intensive, under the direction of Colleen O’ Callaghan where her main focus was to study solely in ballet and pointe Repertory.
MacKenzie looks forward to teaching and spreading the love of dance to younger students while creating a positive and healthy environment for everyone at DanceLova!
