Anna Pavlova was born Anna Matveyevna Pavlovna Pavlova on January 31, 1881 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Pavlova is regarded by many as the best classical ballerina of all time to this day. She fell in love with dance at a very early age. Anna once explained, “I always wanted to dance — from my youngest years. Thus, I built castles in the air out of my hopes and dreams.” The gifted young ballerina graduated dance school as a coryphée and quickly made her company debut in La Fille Mal Gardée. Her career in dance flourished shortly after. Pavlova became best known around the globe for her signature role The Dying Swan. At the age of 50, Pavlova died of double pneumonia in The Hague, Netherlands after a great and successful 30-year career in dance. “Master technique and then forget about it and be natural.” – Anna Pavlova
